Karma

James still laughed sometimes when he saw his body in the mirror. It was funny how fate worked out, how the Great Shift had taken one of the worst days of his life and turned it into one of the best.

He had suspected something was up when Alyssa, one of the more popular girls in class had asked him out on a date that weekend. He wasn’t stupid, he knew there might have been some kind of ulterior motive behind it since he wasn’t exactly the kind of guy anyone popular would go after. Still, though, she had managed to convince him that she sincerely wanted to go out with him, and he figured there was no harm in at least going. He didn’t realize until he got to her house that night and saw her and her pack of friends laughing at him that she had been dared to ask out the biggest loser in class, and he’d been naive enough to not only show up, but ring her doorbell with flowers in hand.

It’s funny, the Great Shift tended to swap the people in closest proximity to each other. If he’d stayed home that night, James probably would have ended up in his mom or his aging neighbor’s body, but instead, when the Shift hit he was standing at Alyssa’s doorstop, a foot and a half away from one of the hottest women he knew as she laughed in his face. James didn’t believe in Karma, but the closest he’d ever come to believing it was the moment he saw Alyssa stumble back in his body, staring back at her own face for the first time.
