No way you’re wearing that out

 

“Uh-uh, no way you’re wearing that out. Go upstairs and change or you’re not going.” Michelle sighed, exasperated at the argument she felt like she’d already been through with her daughter a million times.

Melanie rolled her eyes in annoyance. 

“Are you kidding? this is like totally normal? It’s literally just going to be girls there too, I’m not walking out wearing grandma clothes just because you’re insecure about it!”


Michelle rubbed her fingers over her temple, not about to rehash another one of these conversations. “Just find a top with a little less cleavage please, then you can go. Call me if you need me to pick you up later.”


Melanie’s face lit up. “Deal! Don’t wait up!”


It was weird to even think about, let alone witness, but even weirder was how quickly Michelle was adapting to the new situation she’d found herself in. Her older brother, a man brushing on 40 and previously twice her size was now legally her daughter. It had started two years ago when the 16 year old girl had shown up on her doorstep, hysterically claiming to be Mark. Her story, which she had no choice to believe after she revealed a few details about their childhood that only they would know, was that his body had been stolen by the girl in order to get out of the foster care system, running away with his life and leaving him in hers. 


Unable to move out without a guardian, Michelle had to go through the process of formally adopting her own brother, moving him into her house, and signing him up to finish out her last two years of high school, now under the identity of Melanie, her newly adopted daughter. 


Two years later, “Melanie” had grown into her new role a little too well. Now almost indistinguishable from any other 18 year old girl, she was wearing makeup, pushing her school’s dress code to its limits, and unbeknownst to Michelle, secretly counting down the days before she went off to college so she could really start experimenting with guys her age!
